Malaysian Trumpet Snails (Melanoides tuberculata) are one of the few aquarium invertebrates that genuinely earn their place in a planted tank. They spend most of their lives inside the substrate, turning over sand, eating detritus, and quietly preventing the compacted, gas-pocketed sand bed that causes so many mystery problems in established aquariums.
They are also widely misunderstood. Most of what you read about them online is either "they're a pest" or "they're the best snail ever" — with very little practical detail about the two things that actually decide whether your colony thrives: water hardness and how much you feed. What Are Malaysian Trumpet Snails?
Malaysian Trumpet Snails are freshwater snails in the family Thiaridae. The species kept in the hobby is Melanoides tuberculata, sometimes sold as "MTS", "trumpet snail", or "red-rimmed melania". They are native to parts of Africa, the Middle East and South and Southeast Asia, and have been introduced to warm waters around the world.
The shell is the easiest identifier: a long, narrow, high-spired cone with roughly 8–12 whorls that taper to a sharp point. Colour ranges from pale tan through to warm amber with reddish-brown flame markings, and some lines are almost black. That elongated cone shape is what separates them at a glance from the rounded shells of bladder snails and the flat coils of ramshorn snails.
How big do they get?
In aquariums, most adults settle between 15 and 25 mm (roughly 0.6–1 inch) of shell length. Wild specimens in ideal conditions can reach 30 mm or slightly more, but tank-raised snails rarely get that large — available calcium and food usually cap them first. Newly released young are around 1 mm and look like tiny slivers of grit, which is why keepers often insist their snails "appeared out of nowhere".
Why keepers add them on purpose
- Substrate aeration. This is the real reason to buy them. They continuously burrow through the top few centimetres of sand, which keeps it loose and stops anaerobic dead zones forming.
- Detritus removal. They consume fish waste, uneaten food, decaying leaves and mulm that otherwise accumulates under hardscape and in plant roots.
- Biofilm grazing. They rasp biofilm off surfaces, which matters in shrimp tanks and blackwater setups.
- They leave plants alone. Unlike ramshorns, they show no meaningful interest in healthy plant tissue.
- They are a self-renewing live food. If you keep snail-eating fish, a trumpet snail colony is a standing food supply.

These snails are genuinely tolerant, which is why they establish so easily. But "tolerant" is not the same as "thriving". A snail in soft, acidic water will survive for months while its shell slowly dissolves; that is not success.

Why hardness matters more than pH
A snail shell is calcium carbonate. In soft water there is very little dissolved calcium for the snail to draw on, and soft water is also chemically inclined to dissolve carbonate back out of the shell. The result is a slow, one-directional decline you can see: the sharp tip of the spire goes first, blunting and turning chalky white, then pitting spreads down the whorls.
Eroded shell does not regrow. The snail can add new material at the aperture as it grows, but damage already done to the apex is permanent. This is why keepers with soft tap water often report that their trumpet snails "never last" — the animals are not dying of disease, they are running out of shell.
How to raise calcium and GH
- Crushed coral in the filter or mixed into the substrate. Slow, steady, self-limiting — the most reliable option.
- Cuttlebone. Snap a piece and drop it in. It floats until waterlogged, then sinks. Cheap and effective.
- Wonder Shell or similar mineral blocks. Convenient, dissolves over weeks.
- Remineralising salts (GH+ products) if you use RO or very soft water. Dose to a target GH rather than guessing.
- Calcium-rich foods. Blanched spinach and kale, and snail-specific foods, contribute directly.
Aim for stability rather than a specific number. Snails cope far better with 8 dGH held steady than with water that swings between 4 and 14 after every water change.
Tank Setup
Tank size
A small colony is comfortable in anything from 19 L (5 gallons) upward. There is no real upper limit. In nano tanks, keep the starting numbers modest — 5 to 10 snails — because a small water volume magnifies the effect of any overfeeding.
Substrate is the one thing that matters
This is the decision that determines whether you get the benefit you paid for.
- Sand — ideal. Fine to medium sand at a depth of 4–8 cm (1.5–3 in) lets them burrow fully and is exactly the environment where their aeration work pays off. Pool filter sand, aquarium sand and fine natural river sand all work.
- Fine gravel — acceptable. They will move through 1–2 mm gravel and still process detritus, though they burrow less.
- Coarse gravel — poor. They cannot burrow, so you lose the aeration benefit and food falls out of reach into the gravel bed.
- Bare bottom — not recommended. They will survive but the animal spends its life unable to do what it is built for.

Plants, hardscape and filtration
They are safe with every common aquarium plant, including delicate stems and carpeting species. They graze the biofilm and decaying tissue on leaves without damaging healthy growth, which makes them a good fit for planted tanks.
Any filter is fine. Sponge filters are the safest choice because there is no intake that can trap juveniles. If you run a canister or hang-on-back filter, a coarse sponge over the intake stops small snails being drawn in. Do you need a lid?
Not for the snails. Unlike mystery snails and nerites, Malaysian Trumpet Snails do not climb out of the water and wander. They are almost entirely aquatic and stay in or near the substrate. A lid is still worth having for your fish and for evaporation.
What Do Malaysian Trumpet Snails Eat?
In an established tank, usually nothing you add. They are detritivores, and a functioning aquarium produces their food continuously.
They eat: detritus and mulm, uneaten fish food, fish waste, biofilm, soft algae and diatoms, decaying plant leaves, decomposing botanicals, blanched vegetables, sinking wafers and dead tank inhabitants.
They do not eat: healthy plant tissue, hair algae or black beard algae in any meaningful quantity, or live fish and shrimp. They are not predators and cannot catch anything.
Should you feed them?
In a stocked, established tank: no. Deliberately feeding a trumpet snail colony is the single most common cause of the population explosions people complain about. Every extra pinch of food converts directly into more snails.
Feed only in these situations:
- A new or very clean tank with little detritus. Offer a small piece of blanched vegetable or a single sinking wafer once or twice a week.

Understanding their routine saves a lot of unnecessary worry.
- Daytime burrowing. Most of the colony is underground during daylight. Seeing very few snails is normal, not a die-off.
- Night activity. They emerge in numbers after lights out. If you want to gauge your true population, look an hour after the lights go off.
- Ploughing. You will see shallow furrows and small mounds appear in sand overnight. That is the aeration you bought them for.
- Glass climbing. Occasional and unremarkable, usually grazing biofilm.
When behaviour is a warning sign
Malaysian Trumpet Snails are a genuinely useful early-warning system. If most of the colony climbs high up the glass or gathers at the waterline at once, treat it as a water quality alert and test immediately. Snails leaving the substrate en masse typically means low oxygen, an ammonia or nitrite spike, or a chemical contaminant. Fish often show no symptoms yet at that point.

Breeding and Population Control
You need to understand one fact before you add them: a single Malaysian Trumpet Snail can start a colony. They reproduce parthenogenetically — females produce viable young without fertilisation — so aquarium populations are effectively self-cloning and all-female.
They are also livebearers. They do not lay the visible jelly egg clutches that bladder and ramshorn snails do. Young develop in a brood pouch and are released as fully formed, crawling snails about 1 mm long. Expect 1 to 2 years in a well-maintained aquarium, with some individuals passing two years in cooler, harder water. Growth is fastest in the first three to four months, then slows as the snail approaches adult size. Warmer water shortens lifespan by accelerating metabolism; cooler water extends it. The copper warning
Copper is lethal to snails at concentrations that are therapeutic for fish. That means:

- Check the ingredients of any medication, algaecide or snail-killer before it goes near the tank.
- Trace copper in normal planted-tank fertilisers, dosed as directed, is not a problem. Overdosing is.
- Copper contamination is not easily reversed. Once dosed, that substrate and hardscape can hold residue.
How to Acclimate Malaysian Trumpet Snails
Snails handle shipping well but dislike sudden changes in hardness and temperature. Drip acclimation takes about an hour and dramatically reduces losses.
- Float the sealed bag in the aquarium for 15–20 minutes to match temperature. Keep the lights off.
- Open the bag and pour the snails and their water into a clean container that sits above or beside the tank.
- Start a slow drip from the tank into the container using airline tubing with a loose knot, at roughly 2–3 drops per second.
- Continue for 45–60 minutes, until the container volume has roughly tripled. This is the step that matters most when your GH differs from the shipper's.
- Move the snails only — net them or lift them by hand into the tank. Do not add the shipping water.
- Place them on the substrate, not on hardscape. Right-side-up if you can. They will bury themselves within a few hours.
- Leave them alone for 24 hours with the lights dimmed and no feeding. Some will not move at first; this is normal.

Responsible Keeping
Melanoides tuberculata is established as an invasive species in warm waters in several parts of the world. In most of Canada, outdoor winter temperatures make survival unlikely — but that is not a reason to be careless.
Never release aquarium snails, plants or water into natural waterways, storm drains or garden ponds that connect to them. If you need to reduce a colony, rehome the snails to another keeper, feed them to snail-eating fish, or freeze them before disposal in household waste.
One point that occasionally circulates in a distorted form: in their native and introduced wild ranges, these snails can act as an intermediate host for certain trematode parasites. This is a genuine consideration for wild-collected snails and for public health in affected regions. It is not a meaningful risk for captive-bred aquarium stock raised in closed systems away from the definitive hosts those parasites require. Do Malaysian Trumpet Snails eat live plants?
No. They eat decaying leaves and the biofilm on plant surfaces, but they do not damage healthy plant tissue. If something is eating your plants, look at ramshorn snails, certain fish, or a nutrient deficiency causing leaves to break down.
How many should I start with?
For a 38–76 L (10–20 gallon) tank, 5 to 10 snails is plenty. They reproduce on their own, so a small start becomes a working colony within a couple of months. Starting with a large number in a lightly fed tank just means most of them starve back.
Will they overrun my tank?
Only if you overfeed. Their population is limited by available food, not by breeding capacity. A tank fed conservatively holds a stable, modest colony for years.
