1. Nerite Snails — The Algae Specialists
Best for: glass algae, green spot algae, diatoms, algae on hardscape and broad leaves.
If your problem is visible algae, nerites are the answer and nothing else comes close. They work relentlessly across hard surfaces and are the only common snail that reliably removes stubborn green spot algae.
The defining feature — and the reason many keepers prefer them — is that they cannot reproduce in fresh water. Their larvae require brackish conditions, so your population is exactly the number you bought. No population management, ever.
The trade-offs: they lay hard white eggs on hardscape that will not hatch but are difficult to remove, they will climb out of an open tank, and they die of old age without replacing themselves so you buy them repeatedly. They also do nothing at all for your substrate.
2. Malaysian Trumpet Snails — The Substrate Specialists
Best for: sand substrate aeration, buried detritus, preventing anaerobic pockets.
These are the only common aquarium snail that lives in the substrate rather than on surfaces, which makes them functionally unique. They continuously plough the top few centimetres of sand, keeping it loose and permeable so it does not compact into anaerobic layers that produce toxic hydrogen sulphide.

The trade-off is control. They are livebearers that reproduce without a mate, so there are no eggs to remove and population is governed by how much you feed. In a conservatively fed tank they stay modest; in an overfed tank numbers climb. They also need GH above 6 dGH or their shells erode.
Skip them if you have coarse gravel or a bare bottom — with nothing to burrow into, you lose the entire benefit.

Best for: visual interest, leftover food, being watchable.
Mystery snails (Pomacea bridgesii) are large, colourful and genuinely engaging to watch. They come in gold, ivory, blue, magenta and jade, reach 40–50 mm, and use a siphon to breathe at the surface.
They are chosen for appearance rather than cleaning output. They eat leftover food, some soft algae and decaying plant matter, but they are not efficient detritivores and do nothing for substrate.
Their great advantage for controllability: they need a male and a female, and they lay firm clutches above the waterline, so you can simply remove any clutch you do not want. 4. Bladder Snails — The Efficient Hitchhikers
Best for: surface detritus, biofilm, leftover food, feeder snails.
Bladder snails arrive uninvited on plants and are routinely labelled pests, which undersells them. They are efficient, fast-breeding detritivores that consume leftover food, decaying leaves and biofilm, and they are entirely plant-safe.
They are more forgiving than trumpet snails in soft water, which makes them a better choice for blackwater and low-GH tanks. They are also excellent feeder snails for pea puffers and assassin snails because their thinner shells are easier to crack.

5. Ramshorn Snails — Useful With a Caveat
Best for: detritus and algae — in tanks without delicate plants.
Ramshorns are easy to identify: a flat, coiled, planispiral shell like a tiny ammonite, often reddish-brown or with a striking red body in the "red ramshorn" variety.
They are effective general cleaners, eating detritus, soft algae and decaying matter. The problem is that unlike every other species here, they will rasp soft-leaved plants when food is short. 6. Assassin Snails — The Control Tool
Best for: eating other snails.
Assassin snails (Clea helena) are a management tool rather than a cleanup animal. They hunt and eat other snails, and are the standard recommendation when a population has gone further than a keeper wants.
They are attractive — a conical shell with yellow and dark brown banding — plant-safe, and breed slowly enough that they do not become a problem themselves.

What No Snail Will Do
Worth stating plainly, because it prevents disappointment:
- Remove nitrates. Nothing biological does this in a closed system except plant uptake with plant removal, or water changes.
- Clear hair algae or black beard algae. No common snail eats these meaningfully.
- Eat cyanobacteria. Blue-green algae is a bacterial mat and needs a different approach.
- Fix an overstocked tank. Cleanup crews process waste; they do not increase carrying capacity.
- Clean your filter. They cannot reach inside it.

Every snail here needs the same two things:
