Crappie eat zooplankton as fry, aquatic insects and small crustaceans as juveniles, and small fish — mostly minnows and young sunfish — as adults. Unlike most panfish they keep feeding in open water rather than switching to the bottom, which shapes where they are found all year.

The step to fish happens later in crappie than in walleye or pike, and it is never as complete. Adult crappie continue to take invertebrates throughout their lives, and a stomach containing both a minnow and a dozen midge larvae is entirely normal.
Why crappie stay in open water
Most panfish move to the bottom as they grow. Yellow perch shift to benthic invertebrates; bluegill work vegetation and substrate. Crappie largely do not — they remain oriented to the water column, suspending near structure rather than sitting on it.
The diet follows. Crappie continue to feed on drifting and swimming prey — zooplankton, emerging insects, and small fish that school in open water. This is why they are found suspended over deep water and around standing timber and brush rather than on weed beds, and why their depth changes with the prey rather than the season alone.
It also puts them in direct competition with the young of other predators for the same pelagic prey, which is one reason crappie populations tend to boom and bust rather than sit stable.
Black and white crappie do not eat the same way
Two species are both called crappie in Canada, and they diverge in diet more than most anglers expect.

Black crappie is the species most Canadian anglers encounter; white crappie has a more limited northern range. Where both occur, the difference in diet reduces direct competition — which is a common pattern among closely related fish sharing a lake.

The winter zooplankton dependence is distinctive. Where perch keep working the bottom under ice, crappie frequently return to plankton feeding — which is why they are caught suspended well off the bottom in winter, and why zooplankton predation continues year-round in a lake holding crappie.
Stunted crappie and what causes it
Crappie are among the most reliably stunted fish in small waters. The mechanism is straightforward: they spawn prolifically, they compete with their own young for the same pelagic prey, and without enough predation the year classes survive in numbers the forage base cannot support.
The result is a lake full of 150 mm crappie that never grow further. Diet evidence confirms it — stunted populations show stomach contents dominated by zooplankton and midge larvae at sizes where fish should have shifted to minnows.
The remedy is the same as for stunted perch and for a pond whose fish stop growing: reduce the number of mouths or restore the predators that would have done it. Feeding a stunted population more simply supports more small fish.
