Species most at risk are soft-leaved: dwarf baby tears, many rotala and ludwigia varieties, water sprite, hornwort and cabomba, along with newly planted or already-stressed growth. Tougher plants — anubias, java fern, cryptocorynes, Amazon swords, Vallisneria and bucephalandra — are rarely touched.

Diagnosing which is responsible

Finding snails on a damaged leaf is not proof of guilt. A leaf usually begins dying for its own reasons — nutrient deficiency, shading, melt after planting — and snails then arrive to consume the softened tissue.

Distinguishing the two cases:

  • Ramshorn damage: clean-edged holes and grazed patches on healthy green tissue, often with ramshorns visibly present, typically in an underfed tank.
  • Decay being cleaned up: damage on yellowing or browning tissue, edges ragged and soft, and the underlying pattern matches a deficiency — pinholes with yellow halos for potassium, general yellowing for nitrogen.

A useful test: pull gently on the leaf. Healthy tissue resists; tissue that was already breaking down tears easily.
