What works is changing the conditions that support the population. Here are the seven methods, ranked by real-world effectiveness, with honest notes on what each will and will not do.

Before You Start: Set a Target
Decide what you actually want, because "fewer" is not a plan and total eradication is a different project with different tools.
- Reduce to a modest working colony — the usual goal, and what methods 1–4 achieve. You keep the substrate benefit and lose the visual density.
- Eliminate completely — requires a sustained predator (method 5) or a full substrate replacement. Understand that you also lose the substrate aeration.
Most keepers who think they want eradication actually want the first option. Worth deciding before you add an assassin snail you cannot easily remove.
1. Reduce Feeding (Most Effective)
Effectiveness: very high. Timeline: 4–8 weeks. Risk: none.
This is the actual solution, and everything else is a supplement to it. Trumpet snail numbers are limited by available organic matter. Reduce the input and the population contracts to match.
How to do it properly:
- Feed only what your fish finish in about two minutes. If food is reaching the substrate, that is snail food.
- Cut the amount by roughly a third to start. Most aquarists can do this with no effect on fish health whatsoever.
- Stop feeding the snails entirely — no blanched vegetables, no dedicated wafers.
- Review shrimp feeding. Shrimp foods are a major hidden input in shrimp tanks.
- Add a fast day each week if your stock suits it. Most community fish are healthier for it.
The population will not crash — it will decline steadily as adults die off and fewer juveniles survive. Be patient and consistent; reverting to heavy feeding for a week undoes several weeks of progress.
2. Siphon the Substrate (Highly Effective)
Effectiveness: high. Timeline: immediate plus ongoing. Risk: low.
Reducing feeding cuts new input, but an established tank holds a large reserve of accumulated detritus that will sustain the colony for months. Siphoning removes that reserve and physically extracts juveniles at the same time.
- Use a gravel vacuum on every water change.
- Work the open sand areas thoroughly, and around hardscape bases where mulm collects.
- Cover about a third of the substrate per session so you do not strip the biofilter.

3. Manual Removal of Adults (Effective, Fast)
Effectiveness: moderate to high. Timeline: immediate. Risk: none.
The key insight most people get wrong: remove the large adults, not the small snails. Adults are the breeders. Every mature snail you take out removes future generations, while removing juveniles just reduces competition for the ones left behind.
The bait trap method works well:
- After lights out, place a blanched vegetable slice — zucchini or cucumber works well — or a sinking wafer on the open sand.
- Wait 60–90 minutes. Snails congregate densely on it.
- Lift the whole thing out with a net held underneath, and the attached snails come with it.
- Repeat nightly for a week or two.
A blanched vegetable in a jar laid on its side, or a purpose-made snail trap, works on the same principle. Note the mild irony: you are adding food to remove snails, so remove the bait and its passengers every time rather than leaving it in.
Dispose of them responsibly. Feed them to snail-eating fish, rehome them to another keeper, or freeze before disposal in household waste. Never release aquarium livestock into natural waterways.
4. Lower the Temperature (Moderate)
Effectiveness: moderate. Timeline: 4–6 weeks. Risk: depends on your fish.
Snails are ectotherms, so temperature drives metabolism and reproduction directly. Moving from 27 °C to 22–23 °C measurably slows breeding and feeding.
Only do this if your livestock is comfortable in the cooler range — many community fish are, but discus, some gouramis and various wild species are not. Never compromise fish welfare to manage snails. Change temperature by no more than about 1 °C per day.

Predators work, and they keep working. That is both the appeal and the catch — they do not stop at "fewer".

6. Reduce Available Calcium (Not Recommended)
Effectiveness: moderate. Timeline: months. Risk: high collateral damage.
Lowering GH does slow shell growth and reproduction. It is listed here because you will see it suggested, and it is a bad idea in most tanks.
Soft water harms your other invertebrates — shrimp need calcium to moult successfully — and it degrades the snails you keep rather than reducing their number quickly, producing eroded, unhealthy animals instead of fewer of them. If you keep shrimp or other snails, this method costs more than it gains.
7. Chemical Snail Killers (Avoid)
Effectiveness: high. Timeline: days. Risk: severe.
Copper-based snail treatments do kill trumpet snails. They also:
- Kill every shrimp in the tank
- Kill every other snail, including nerites and mystery snails you paid for
- Cause a mass die-off — hundreds of decomposing snails buried in your substrate, spiking ammonia badly
- Leave residue in substrate and hardscape that can affect invertebrates for a long time afterwards
- Solve nothing permanently — the overfeeding that caused the boom is untouched

For almost every tank: methods 1 + 2 + 3 together. Cut feeding by a third, siphon a third of the substrate on every water change, and bait-trap adults nightly for two weeks. Expect a clearly smaller, stable colony within six to eight weeks, with the substrate benefit intact and nothing else in your tank harmed.
Complete Eradication
If you genuinely want them gone, be realistic: partial measures rebound because a single surviving snail rebuilds the colony. Realistically it takes either a sustained predator until you see none for several months, or a full substrate replacement with all hardscape and plants sterilised or discarded.
