Almost every animal sold as "cleanup crew" works the same two square metres: the glass, the hardscape and the tops of leaves. Very few work the substrate, which is where waste actually settles and where problems actually start.

That distinction matters because it sets realistic expectations. Snails will not lower your nitrates. They will stop a corner of your tank turning into anaerobic sludge.

Judged on that basis, trumpet snails are among the most useful animals available, because the substrate is the hardest place for a keeper to maintain and the easiest place for problems to develop unseen.

Why the Substrate Is the Critical Zone

Gravity does the same thing in every aquarium. Uneaten food, fish waste, dying leaves and general mulm all end up on and in the substrate, especially in low-flow areas behind hardscape and among plant roots.

Left undisturbed, three things follow:

  1. Compaction. Sand settles and water stops circulating through it.
  2. Oxygen depletion. Without flow, oxygen cannot reach the lower layers.
  3. Anaerobic pockets. Anaerobic bacteria take over and produce hydrogen sulphide — the rotten-egg smell from old sand. It is toxic, and breaking a large pocket open during maintenance can release a slug of it into the water column.

Do they compete with shrimp?

  • Using coarse gravel. They cannot burrow, so you lose the entire benefit. Sand or fine gravel only.
