Mayfly nymphs are the aquatic juvenile stage of mayflies, living one to two years underwater before emerging as short-lived winged adults. They are identified by three tail filaments and paired gills along the abdomen, and they are both a primary trout food and one of the most reliable indicators of clean water.
How to identify a mayfly nymph
Three features separate a mayfly nymph from the other insect larvae found in the same gravel and leaf litter.
- Three tail filaments. Most species have three; a few have two. Stonefly nymphs have exactly two, which is the fastest way to tell the groups apart.
- Gills along the abdomen. Paired plate-like or feathery gills run down the sides of the body and often visibly flutter.
- A single claw on each leg. Stonefly nymphs have two.
Caddisfly larvae are easier still — most build a portable case of sand, gravel or plant fragments, which no mayfly does. Midge larvae are worm-like with no legs at all.
Four body types, four habitats
Mayfly nymphs are not one shape. Body form follows the water they live in, and recognising the form tells you where the animal came from.

The burrowing forms matter most in lakes and ponds. Where a stream carries mostly clingers, a soft-bottomed lake supports burrowers that spend their lives in the sediment and emerge in large synchronised hatches.
The life cycle, and why the adult barely eats
A mayfly spends the overwhelming majority of its life as a nymph — commonly one year, sometimes two — moulting many times as it grows. The winged stage lasts from a few hours to a few days.
Mayflies are unique among insects in having two winged stages. The nymph emerges at the surface as a subimago (the angler's "dun"), a dull-winged sexually immature form, then moults again into the imago ("spinner"), which mates and dies. Adult mayflies have vestigial mouthparts and do not feed at all.
The ecological consequence is that essentially all of a mayfly's feeding, growth and value as fish food happens underwater. The famous hatches are the brief, visible end of a process that ran for a year out of sight.
What mayfly nymphs eat
Most mayfly nymphs are grazers and collectors rather than predators. They scrape the film of algae and bacteria off stones, gather fine organic particles from the sediment, and shred decaying leaf material.
That places them at the base of the invertebrate food web, converting material no fish can use — biofilm, detritus, leaf litter — into animal protein that fish can. It is the same conversion performed by amphipods and by grazing snails, and it is why a water body with abundant mayflies tends to support fish well.
What eats mayfly nymphs
Mayfly nymphs are eaten by nearly every predator in fresh water that can find them.
- Trout — mayfly nymphs are a staple of the drift, and the emergence period concentrates them at the surface.
- Yellow perch and other panfish — taken from vegetation and sediment year-round.
- Juvenile bass and bluegill — an important step between plankton and fish prey.
- Predatory invertebrates — dragonfly and damselfly nymphs, water beetles, stonefly nymphs.
Their importance peaks during emergence, when nymphs leave the bottom and rise through the water column. For a brief period a normally dispersed, well-hidden prey animal becomes concentrated and defenceless, and fish feed heavily and selectively on them.
Why mayflies indicate clean water
Mayfly nymphs are intolerant of low oxygen and of many pollutants, and because they live in the water for a year or more they cannot avoid a period of poor conditions the way a mobile adult can. Their presence integrates water quality over that whole period.
This is why they are central to biological monitoring. Agencies assessing streams and lakes count benthic macroinvertebrates and weight the results toward three intolerant orders — mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies. A community rich in mayflies indicates sustained good conditions; a community reduced to midge larvae and worms indicates the opposite.
The signal runs in one direction only. Abundant mayflies are strong evidence of good water; their absence has many possible causes, including natural ones such as unsuitable substrate, so it is weaker evidence of a problem.
