Freshwater Aquarium Cleanup Crew: How to Build One Properly

Most cleanup crews are assembled by buying whatever is labelled "cleaner" at the store. The result is usually three animals that all do the same job — grazing surfaces — and nobody working the substrate, where waste actually accumulates.

A crew built properly assigns each zone to a specialist. Here is how to do that, and what to expect honestly.

Quick answer

Build by zone, not by species. A complete freshwater crew covers four jobs: algae on hard surfaces (nerite snails), inside the substrate (Malaysian Trumpet Snails), biofilm and crevices (Neocaridina or amano shrimp), and botanical breakdown (scuds, optional). Understand the limit: a cleanup crew processes waste, it does not remove it. Only water changes and filter maintenance do that.

What a Cleanup Crew Can and Cannot Do

Get this right first, because unrealistic expectations are the main reason people feel let down.

What they do: break large organic matter into smaller particles and metabolic products your biofilter can handle; reach places you cannot; keep waste from accumulating undisturbed in dead corners; graze algae and biofilm before it becomes visible; and consume dead animals before they foul the water.

What they do not do: remove nitrate or phosphate from the system; eliminate the need for water changes; increase your tank's carrying capacity; clean inside your filter; clear hair algae, black beard algae or cyanobacteria; or fix overstocking or overfeeding.

The single most important consequence: nutrients stay in a closed system until you physically remove them. Snails and shrimp move waste through the cycle faster. They do not export it. Water changes export it.

The Four Zones

Zone 1: Hard surfaces — algae

Glass, hardscape, equipment and broad leaves. This is where algae is visible and where most "cleaner" animals work.

Best: nerite snails. The most effective algae eaters available, and the only common snail that reliably clears green spot algae. Critically, they cannot reproduce in fresh water, so your population stays exactly what you bought. Stock roughly one per 19–38 L.

Also good: amano shrimp. They reach crevices snails cannot and work soft algae and detritus energetically. They also do not breed in fresh water, so numbers stay fixed. Our amano shrimp are a reliable pairing with nerites.

Zone 2: Inside the substrate — the neglected zone

This is where gravity puts everything: uneaten food, fish waste, dying leaves, mulm behind hardscape and among roots. It is also the hardest zone for a keeper to maintain and the easiest place for problems to develop unseen.

Left alone, sand compacts, water stops flowing through it, oxygen runs out, and anaerobic bacteria produce hydrogen sulphide — the rotten-egg smell from old sand, which is toxic and can be released in a slug during maintenance.

Best: Malaysian Trumpet Snails. They are the only common aquarium snail that lives in the substrate rather than on it, ploughing the top few centimetres continuously and eating detritus where it settles. Also good: corydoras. They sift the top surface but do not work below it, so they complement rather than replace the snails. They need sand — sharp gravel damages their barbels.

Zone 3: Biofilm and fine detritus

The film coating every surface, plus fine particulate settling in crevices, moss and plant bases.

Best: Neocaridina shrimp. Constantly active, they graze biofilm and fine detritus across the whole tank, breed readily so the colony sustains itself, and add colour and movement. They also break down leaf litter. Options include cherry shrimp, golden back yellow shrimp and snowball shrimp. Setup detail is in breeding Neocaridina shrimp.

Also good: bladder snails. Efficient surface detritivores, more tolerant of soft water than trumpet snails, and useful feeder snails. Live bladder snails establish quickly — see whether they suit your tank.

Zone 4: Botanical breakdown (optional)

If you run leaf litter, seed pods or a blackwater setup, botanicals need shredding into material other animals can use.

Best: scuds (freshwater amphipods). They shred leaves and botanicals far faster than snails or shrimp, reproduce prolifically, and double as high-protein live food. Our live scud cultures establish quickly.

Order of Introduction

Adding everything at once causes losses. Sequence it:

  1. Cycle the tank fully first. Ammonia and nitrite at zero. Invertebrates are less tolerant than most fish — see cycling a tank.
  2. Confirm hardness. GH 6–15 dGH, pH 7.0 or above, with a permanent calcium source. Every snail and shrimp needs this — see pH, GH and KH.
  3. Let biofilm develop. Two to four weeks after cycling. A sterile new tank has nothing for grazers to eat.
  4. Add snails first. Hardiest, and they begin processing detritus immediately.
  5. Add shrimp two weeks later, once the tank is visibly settled. Drip acclimate.
  6. Add bottom-dwelling fish last, after the invertebrate colonies are established enough to withstand it.

Do You Feed a Cleanup Crew?

In an established, stocked tank: no. Detritus, biofilm and decaying plant matter are produced continuously and are more than enough.

Deliberate feeding is the most common cause of the population booms people then complain about — particularly with trumpet and bladder snails, whose numbers track food availability directly. See what a population boom means.

Feed only when: the tank is brand new with little biofilm; you keep shrimp, which benefit from targeted feeding two or three times a week; or you are running a deliberate breeding colony.

Signs Your Crew Is Undersized

  • Visible detritus accumulating on the substrate between water changes
  • Rotten-egg smell when you disturb sand — you need burrowing snails
  • Uneaten food still present hours after feeding
  • Algae outpacing your grazers on glass and hardscape
  • Sludge building under hardscape and in plant bases
  • Dead animals not consumed within a day

Before adding more animals, check whether the real problem is feeding volume or filtration. A crew cannot out-work a genuine overfeeding habit.

What is the best freshwater cleanup crew?

Do cleanup crews reduce water changes?
