What Do Walleye Eat?

Walleye eat mostly other fish — yellow perch, shiners, minnows and juvenile whitefish — with insects and crustaceans filling the diet of young fish. What changes the answer is light: walleye feed hardest at dawn, dusk and in stained water, where their eyes work and their prey's do not.

Walleye diet by size and age

A walleye's diet changes more with its own body size than with the water it lives in. The shift runs in one direction — from drifting invertebrates to whole fish — and it happens quickly in the first year.

The transition to fish is the important one. Once a walleye can swallow a minnow whole it stops working for invertebrates, because a single fish returns far more energy than an afternoon of picking at insect larvae.

Why low light drives walleye feeding

Walleye have a reflective layer behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum — the same structure that makes a cat's eyes shine. It bounces light back through the light-sensitive cells a second time, which roughly doubles the useful signal in dim conditions. It is also why the fish is named for its eyes.

The consequence for diet is direct. In bright midday sun a perch can see a walleye coming; at dusk, in stained water, or under a chop, it cannot. Walleye therefore do most of their feeding in a band of light too dim for their prey and bright enough for them. Anglers describe this as a bite window. Ecologically it is a visual arms race that walleye win at one specific light level.

This is also why walleye in clear lakes tend to feed deeper and at night, while walleye in tannin-stained or turbid water feed shallower and earlier. The behaviour is not a preference for time of day — it is a preference for a light intensity.

The prey species that matter most

Across most Canadian walleye water the diet concentrates on a short list of soft-rayed and spiny-rayed forage fish.

  • Shiners and other minnows — spottail, emerald and golden shiners, taken heavily where they school in open water.
  • Juvenile whitefish and cisco — important in deeper, colder northern lakes.
  • Young of their own species — walleye are cannibalistic when year classes overlap and other forage is thin.
  • Crayfish and large invertebrates — a real but secondary component, more common in smaller or warmer waters.

The perch relationship is worth sitting with. A walleye lake is usually a perch lake, and the two populations regulate each other: perch eat the invertebrates and small fish that would otherwise compete, and walleye crop the perch. Remove either and the lake food web reorganises around whatever is left.

The autumn pattern matters most for understanding the species. Walleye do not eat continuously through the year; they eat in proportion to water temperature and prey availability, and the largest individual meals of the year are usually taken in cold water shortly before freeze-up.

What walleye fry eat

Newly hatched walleye absorb their yolk sac within days and then must find food immediately. Their first meals are the smallest drifting animals in the water column — rotifers, then copepod nauplii, then cladocerans such as Daphnia.

This is the same first-food bottleneck faced by almost every freshwater fish, and it is why the plankton community determines year-class strength far more than spawning success does. A lake can produce enormous numbers of walleye eggs and still fail to produce a strong year class if the zooplankton bloom does not arrive at the right moment. Copepods in particular are both a first food and, in their larger predatory forms, a hazard to very small fry.

Common misconceptions

"Walleye only feed at night." They feed at a light level, not a clock time. In stained water that light level occurs mid-afternoon.

"Walleye are lazy predators." They are ambush-and-pursuit feeders with a genuine sensory advantage, not scavengers. The reputation comes from their preference for conditions in which they do not need to chase far.

"Big walleye eat big baitfish only." Stomach contents routinely include prey far smaller than the maximum a fish could swallow. Predators take what is available and cheap to catch, not what is largest.

"They stop eating in winter." They do not. Feeding slows with metabolism, but walleye remain active under ice — which is the entire basis of the winter fishery.
