Northern pike eat fish above all else — perch, suckers, whitefish, cisco and smaller pike — plus frogs, crayfish and the occasional duckling or small mammal. The distinguishing fact is prey size: a pike will regularly attack prey one third to one half of its own length.
The prey-size rule that defines pike
Most freshwater predators take prey a small fraction of their own length. Pike do not. A pike's gape, its backward-facing teeth and its ability to distend the throat let it swallow prey that looks impossible — commonly a third of its body length, sometimes half.

This single trait explains most of pike ecology. A large pike does not need many meals, so it can afford to sit still for long periods. It also means that in a lake with big pike, mid-sized fish of every species — including young pike — are inside the predation window.
How pike hunt, and what that means for diet
Pike are ambush predators built for a single explosive strike over a short distance. The body is a long lever with most of the propulsive surface set far back, which produces very high acceleration and very poor endurance. A pike that misses does not usually chase.
Diet follows directly from that mechanism. Pike eat what comes within about a body length of cover — weed edges, drop-offs, fallen timber, the boundary between clear and stained water. They are not open-water pursuit predators, and prey that stays in the middle of a large lake is largely unavailable to them.
It also explains why pike diet is broader than most predators'. An ambush feeder does not select; it takes whatever passes the ambush. Frogs, crayfish, ducklings, small mammals and waterbirds all appear in pike stomach contents, not because pike seek them but because they crossed the wrong patch of weed.
Main prey species in Canadian water

Pike show a mild preference for soft-rayed fish over spiny-rayed ones where both are available, which is why suckers and cisco are taken out of proportion to their abundance. Spines make a fish harder to swallow, and an ambush predator that has already committed to a strike pays for that difficulty.
Cannibalism is normal, not exceptional
Cannibalism among pike is not a curiosity of overcrowded water — it is a structural feature of the species. Pike fry become piscivorous within weeks, siblings differ in size almost immediately, and the prey-size rule means a slightly larger sibling can eat a slightly smaller one.
The population-level effect is that pike partly regulate their own numbers. A lake with many small pike and few large ones is usually a lake where the large fish have been removed, not one where cannibalism has failed. Where big pike persist, they suppress the year classes below them, and the size structure stays broad.

Pike remain active in cold water to a degree that surprises people used to warmwater species. They spawn earlier than almost any other freshwater fish in Canada and feed through the ice — a cold-water tolerance that shapes when they are catchable and what is available to eat.
What pike fry eat
Newly hatched pike attach to vegetation with an adhesive gland while the yolk sac is absorbed, then begin feeding on small crustaceans — copepods, cladocerans and other zooplankton. Within a few weeks they switch to insect larvae, and shortly after that to fish.
That switch is fast, and it is the reason pike year classes are so variable. A strong pike year class requires flooded vegetation for spawning, a plankton bloom timed to first feeding, and forage fish small enough to eat by the time the fry outgrow invertebrates. Miss any one of the three and the year class thins out. The dependency runs all the way down to the freshwater food web's primary producers.
