Bladder snails (Physella acuta) are small, air-breathing freshwater snails that arrive uninvited on live plants and then multiply fast. They are among the most common fish tank snails on earth, and they are not a disease, not a plant-eater, and not a sign that you did something wrong. Bladder snails are detritivores and biofilm grazers — they eat leftover food, soft algae, dead plant tissue and waste. In a balanced aquarium these freshwater snails act as a free cleanup crew and a renewable live food source for puffers, loaches and assassin snails. When their numbers explode, the snails are not the problem; they are the readout. A bladder snail bloom means your tank is receiving more organic matter than it can process.

What Bladder Snails Are
A bladder snail is a small freshwater gastropod in the family Physidae, almost always the species Physella acuta. The name comes from the air bubble it carries inside its mantle cavity. Unlike nerites, mystery snails or Malaysian trumpet snails, bladder snails do not have gills — they have a lung. According to the USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species database, this is why these water snails are so often seen hanging near the surface film: they are surfacing to breathe.
That single anatomical fact explains most of their behaviour. It is why they survive in stagnant water, in buckets, in shipping bags, in ditches, and in tanks with terrible oxygen levels. It is also why they are so hard to eradicate — a snail that breathes air is not going to be defeated by a low-oxygen event that would wipe out gill-breathing freshwater aquarium snails.
They also have no operculum — no trapdoor to seal the shell. Where a nerite or mystery snail can slam its door shut and wait out a problem, a bladder snail can only retract. That is a survival weakness, and it is precisely what makes them the best feeder snail in the hobby: there is no armoured lid for a puffer’s beak to fight.
Naming note that trips people up
You will see both Physa acuta and Physella acuta in print. They are the same animal. Physella is the currently accepted genus; Physa is the older name still used widely in aquarium literature. You will also see this snail described under long-abandoned names like Physella heterostropha, Physella integra and Physella virgata — all collapsed into P. acuta once genetic work showed they were one variable species.
Where bladder snails come from
Here is the part almost every aquarium article gets backwards. Bladder snails are usually described as a European species that invaded North America. The genetics say the opposite.
The USGS species profile summarises the current evidence: P. acuta is closely related to North American physid snails, the fossil record for the group is abundant in North America and absent in Europe, and the species is now understood to be native to North America and introduced to Europe — most likely via the cotton trade in the early 1800s, carrying snails from the Mississippi drainage to France, where the species was first formally described. Today Physella acuta occurs on every continent except Antarctica. The modern vector is the aquarium trade, and specifically the movement of live aquatic plants.
Almost always, that is how they reached your tank. Bladder snail eggs are laid in flat, clear jelly clutches pressed tight against leaves and stems, and they are close to invisible on a wet, folded plant in a shipping bag. How to Identify Bladder Snails
There is one test that settles it almost every time, and it takes about three seconds.
The sinistral test
Hold the snail (or look at it on the glass) with the pointed tip of the shell facing up and the opening facing you. If the opening sits on the left, it is a bladder snail. Nearly every other snail in the freshwater hobby — pond snails, ramshorns, nerites, mystery snails, trumpet snails — opens on the right.
Left-handed (sinistral) coiling is genuinely rare among gastropods, which is what makes it such a reliable diagnostic. The USGS species profile lists the sinistral shell as the defining characteristic of the genus, alongside a mantle edge that partially wraps over the outside of the shell.
If the snail is too small to orient, use the backup checks:
- Antennae. Long, thin, thread-like — almost wire-thin.
- Body colour. Dark grey to near-black, usually flecked with gold or pale spots. That flecking is on the mantle and shows through the translucent shell.
- Shell. Thin, glossy, translucent fawn or amber. Not chalky, not ridged, not flat-coiled.
- Speed. Bladder snails are noticeably fast and twitchy. They crawl upside-down along the surface film, drop on a mucus thread, and right themselves quickly. Compared to a ramshorn, they look agitated.

Bladder Snail Versus Pond Snail
In the hobby, “pond snail” and “pest snail” get used as catch-all labels for anything small and unwanted. That is where most bad advice comes from. A true pond snail is a Lymnaea or Radix species in the family Lymnaeidae — a different family with a larger adult size and a genuine appetite for softer plant tissue. A bladder snail is a physid. Treating them as interchangeable is how people end up nuking a harmless cleanup crew because they read a warning written about a different animal.
Two features separate them instantly: shell direction and antennae shape. Bladder snails open left and have thread-thin antennae. Pond snails open right and have broad, flat, triangular antennae that look like tiny shark fins.

What Bladder Snails Eat
Physid snails are detritivores and grazers. The USGS profile lists their diet simply as detritus and algae. In an aquarium that translates to:
- Biofilm on glass, hardscape, plant leaves and equipment
- Soft green and brown algae, including diatoms on new setups
- Uneaten flake, pellet, wafer and frozen food
- Decaying leaf litter and melting plant tissue
- Fish and invertebrate waste, and dead animals (they are efficient at carrion)
- Blanched vegetables — zucchini, spinach, cucumber — if offered
In an established tank you never need to feed them. They will find enough. In a dedicated feeder culture, feed lightly with algae wafers, blanched vegetables, spirulina or crushed fish food, and add a calcium source such as cuttlebone or crushed coral to keep shells sound. Do Bladder Snails Harm Live Plants?
No — not healthy plants. This is the single most persistent myth about the species, and it costs a lot of harmless snails their lives. Aquarium Co-Op states it plainly: most small freshwater aquarium snails — including bladder snails — do not eat healthy aquatic plants, and when they are seen on a leaf it is normally because that leaf is already dying back.
What you are actually watching when a bladder snail is parked on a leaf is grazing — it is scraping biofilm and algae off the leaf surface, which is a service, not damage. If a leaf genuinely disappears under snails, that leaf was already failing. The usual culprits are a nutrient deficiency, emersed-to-submersed transition melt, or shipping damage.
Diagnostic shortcut
Snails clustered on one specific plant while ignoring the rest of the tank is not a snail problem. It is that plant telling you it is dying. Check your fertiliser routine, CO² and lighting before you blame the cleanup crew.
Benefits of Bladder Snails in Aquariums
Most of the hobby treats these snails as a cost. Read them as labour instead.
1. Continuous biofilm and soft-algae grazing
Bladder snails work around the clock across surfaces most cleanup crews never reach — the underside of leaves, the back of the glass, filter intakes, hardscape crevices. They will not clear green spot algae or hair algae, but they suppress the biofilm layer those problems build on.
2. Detritus processing and faster mineralisation
By shredding decaying organic matter into smaller particles, they dramatically increase the surface area available to bacteria. Detritus that would take weeks to break down intact gets processed far faster once snails have worked it. This is the same mechanism that makes scuds valuable in a mature tank.
3. Uneaten food cleanup — real ammonia insurance
A pellet that rots produces ammonia. A pellet that gets eaten by a snail produces snail. That is not a trivial distinction in a nano tank or a fry-rearing system where one missed feed can spike parameters. 4. Substrate and leaf-litter turnover
They work the top layer of substrate and the underside of leaf litter, which keeps anaerobic pockets from setting up in low-flow corners. In a blackwater setup running Indian almond leaves, bladder snails accelerate leaf breakdown and turn that litter into usable biofilm faster.
5. A living bioindicator
This is the benefit nobody talks about. Physella acuta is used widely in freshwater ecotoxicology precisely because it is sensitive, easy to culture and responds visibly to contamination — published work has proposed it as a model organism for heavy-metal bioaccumulation studies, and it appears repeatedly as a test species in pharmaceutical and metal toxicity research.
Translated to your aquarium: bladder snails are extremely sensitive to copper and to sudden pH and hardness crashes. If your snails suddenly climb to the surface, seal up or die en masse while your fish look fine, treat that as an alarm. Test immediately. They fail before your fish do.
6. Free, renewable live food
Soft shells, small size, no operculum, and a reproduction rate that outpaces predation. For pea puffers, loaches, assassin snails and many cichlids, bladder snails are the most self-sustaining feeder in the hobby — you never buy them twice.
7. Bioload for cycling and shrimp-tank stability
A small snail population provides a gentle, continuous ammonia source that keeps a filter’s bacterial colony fed between stockings. In a shrimp tank especially, they help prevent the mini-cycles that follow a light bioload. They are entirely safe with cherry shrimp and every other Neocaridina line — they compete for nothing a shrimp needs and cannot harm a shrimplet.

Bladder Snail Population Growth
Two mechanisms do all the work.
1. They are hermaphrodites that can self-fertilise. Every bladder snail has both male and female reproductive organs. Two snails can cross-fertilise each other in a single meeting, and a lone snail with no partner at all can still reproduce on its own. This is why “I only ever saw one” is not a defence. One is enough.
2. The output is relentless. Research cited by the USGS reports that sexually mature adults can lay 50–100 eggs per week for up to a year. Clutches hatch in roughly two to three weeks depending on temperature, and offspring reach maturity in about four to six weeks in warm water. Run that compounding curve for two months and you get the “how did I get four hundred snails” experience that fills aquarium forums.
Temperature changes the strategy, not just the speed
Research summarised by Fishkeeping World found that snails raised at around 15 °C (59 °F) matured slowly — about 34 days — but produced far more eggs over the study period and lived dramatically longer, averaging over 400 days. Snails raised at around 28 °C (82 °F) matured in roughly 18 days but produced far fewer eggs and lived much shorter lives.
In plain terms: cool water produces fewer, slower, longer-lived, more fecund snails. Warm water produces a fast, cheap, high-turnover population. The Snail Mirror Principle
A bladder snail population does not grow because snails are present. It grows because food is present. Snail numbers are limited by surplus organic matter, not by breeding capacity — breeding capacity is effectively unlimited.
So the population is a live meter for your feeding rate. A stable, modest population means your inputs and your biological processing are matched. A sudden bloom means you are putting more food into the tank than the fish, plants and bacteria are consuming. Removing snails treats the reading. Feeding less treats the cause.

Expert tip: harvest, don’t cull
The vegetable trap and a feeder culture are the same technique used for two different outcomes. Instead of throwing trapped snails away, drop them into a feeder tub. Within a month you have a self-sustaining live food supply funded entirely by the food you were already wasting.
Bladder Snails as Natural Prey
This is the use case that turns a “pest” into an asset, and it is why a lot of experienced keepers deliberately run a bladder snail culture in a spare tub.
Three properties make them the best feeder snail available:
- Thin, soft shells. Easy for small beaks to crush. A juvenile pea puffer that cannot handle a ramshorn can handle a bladder snail.
- No operculum. Nothing to pry open.
- Continuous size range. A single healthy culture produces everything from 1 mm hatchlings to 10 mm adults simultaneously, so you always have the right size on hand.

Bladder Snail Care
The honest version: there is almost no such thing as bladder snail care. These water snails survive conditions that kill most aquarium livestock. But if you are running them deliberately — as a feeder culture or a display cleanup crew — three things actually matter.
1. Hardness and calcium (the only real requirement)
Bladder snail shells are thin. In soft, acidic water they erode — you will see white pitting at the spire, then holes, then a snail that cannot repair itself. Aim for GH of at least 4 dGH, ideally 6–12, with KH high enough to hold pH above 6.5. If you are running a soft blackwater setup, expect shell damage and plan for it. 2. Never use copper
Copper is lethal to snails and shrimp at treatment doses. That includes most commercial “snail eliminator” products, many ich and parasite medications, and some plant fertilisers at high dosing. If your tank contains snails or shrimp you want to keep, read the ingredient list before every treatment — copper does not fully leave a tank once it binds to substrate and silicone.
3. Feeding and maintenance
Feed nothing in an established tank. In a culture, feed lightly and add calcium. The rest is straightforward: stable temperature, a cycled filter or mature sponge, surface access for breathing, and normal water change discipline. Aquarium and Pond Considerations
In the aquarium
A guide that only lists benefits is a sales page. The honest downsides:
- Aesthetics. Forty snails on the front glass of a competition aquascape is a real problem for the person who built it. That is a legitimate reason to remove them and needs no other justification.
- Equipment. Small snails get into filter intakes, impellers and CO² lines. Pre-filter sponges solve this.
- Mass die-off risk. A large population that dies at once — after a copper treatment, heater failure or pH crash — dumps a significant ammonia load.
- Competition in specialist tanks. If you are breeding an ornamental snail species, bladder snails compete for the same biofilm and calcium. Our mystery snail breeding guide covers that trade-off.
- Parasite host potential. P. acuta can serve as an intermediate host for trematodes, including those responsible for swimmer’s itch in the wild. Worth stating plainly — and worth putting in context. That life cycle requires wild birds or mammals as definitive hosts. In a closed indoor aquarium stocked from captive-bred sources, the cycle cannot complete. It is a reason not to introduce wild-collected snails, not a reason to fear the ones already in your tank.
In outdoor ponds
In a Canadian garden pond or stock pond, physid snails are part of a functioning invertebrate community — grazers that keep surfaces clean, break down leaf fall, and feed everything from trout fry to damselfly nymphs. Never release aquarium snails into the wild
P. acuta has been documented displacing native snail fauna where it has been introduced, and it outcompetes native physids more aggressively as water temperatures rise. Dumping a bucket into a local pond, ditch or storm drain is how an aquarium hitchhiker becomes an established population. Keep bladder snails in closed systems.
