Why Pea Puffers Need Snails
Most fish can be fed on whatever they will accept. Pea puffers cannot, and the reason sits in their skull.
Pufferfish belong to the family Tetraodontidae — literally "four teeth." The mouth is not lined with individual teeth; it carries four fused dental plates that form a parrot-like beak. Critically, that beak grows continuously throughout the fish's life, in the same way a rodent's incisors do. In the wild, the growth is balanced by wear: a puffer picking snails and small crustaceans out of vegetation all day is grinding the beak down as fast as it grows.
Remove the hard food and you remove the wear, but not the growth. The beak keeps extending until the fish physically cannot close its mouth or generate enough bite force to process food. At that point the puffer starves in a tank full of food. The distinction that matters
Snails are not "a food pea puffers enjoy." They are a maintenance requirement with calories attached. A puffer fed exclusively on bloodworms will look perfectly healthy for months and then stop eating — and by the time the symptom appears, the cause is six months old. This is why the feeding plan has to be built before the fish arrives, not adjusted after a problem shows up.
There is a second reason, and it is behavioural. C. travancoricus is endemic to heavily vegetated, slow-moving backwaters in Kerala and southern Karnataka, where it spends its day picking through plants and leaf litter for small invertebrates. That foraging drive does not switch off in a glass box. A puffer that gets a pinch of thawed food dropped in front of it once a day is being fed but not occupied, and bored puffers are the ones that turn on their tank mates. Live snails restore the hunt.
Why Bladder Snails Beat Every Other Feeder Snail
Any snail wears a beak in theory. In practice, most of them are the wrong tool for a fish this small.
A pea puffer maxes out around 3.5 cm and has to generate real force through a beak a couple of millimetres across. The shell it is attacking needs to be thin enough to fail under that force and small enough to handle. The trapdoor point deserves emphasis. An operculum is a hinged plate that seals the shell opening. Trumpet snails and nerites have one; bladder snails do not. A pea puffer attacking an operculate snail is trying to breach a sealed container with a tool designed for shells — it usually gives up, and you conclude your puffer "doesn't like snails."
The under-appreciated advantage: one culture, every size
Because bladder snails breed continuously rather than in generational waves, a healthy culture holds 1 mm hatchlings and 10 mm adults at the same time. You are not waiting for a batch to reach the right size — you net what fits your fish today. No other feeder snail gives you that on demand.
Sizing: Matching the Snail to the Fish
Wrong-sized snails are the most common reason a puffer refuses to eat, and the failure runs in both directions. Too large and the fish cannot break the shell; too small and it does not wear the beak or deliver meaningful calories.
The rule of thumb that works: the snail should be no wider than the puffer's eye. That sounds imprecise but it scales automatically with the fish and it is easy to judge at the glass without a ruler.

Two practical notes. First, offer a mix of sizes rather than a uniform batch — a puffer that has to select prey is doing more of the work its brain evolved for. Second, if your fish repeatedly picks at a snail and abandons it, drop one size class immediately. That is not fussiness; that is a fish telling you it cannot generate the force.
How Many Snails Per Puffer, Per Day
Published guidance clusters around 1–3 small snails per adult puffer per day, with some keepers reporting 3–5 for larger, very active individuals. Treat that as a starting point and calibrate against the fish.
The reliable indicator is belly shape, viewed from the side:
- Slightly rounded — correct. This is the target after a feed.
- Flat or concave — underfed. Increase quantity or check for beak problems.
- Visibly bulging or bloated — overfed. Skip a day and reduce.
Pea puffers are opportunistic and will keep eating past the point of sense, so quantity is your job, not theirs. Most keepers run six feeding days and one fasting day per week, which also lets you watch appetite return — a puffer that ignores food after a fast day is signalling something.
Do not let snails breed freely in the puffer tank
It sounds efficient — a self-feeding display. In practice the puffer eats every snail it can catch, the survivors are the ones hiding in the substrate, and you lose all control over portion size and beak wear. Worse, snails you cannot count are snails you cannot ration. Keep the colony in a separate container and feed deliberately.

Here is where most pea puffer setups quietly fail. People buy a starter pack of snails, watch the puffer eat them in a fortnight, and end up paying for feeders indefinitely or falling back on frozen food. The fix is arithmetic done before the fish arrives.
Treat the culture as an account with a production side and a consumption side. Call it the Snail Ledger.
The Snail Ledger
Consumption: 2 snails/day × 1 puffer = ~60 per month, ~730 per year.
Production: bladder snails are hermaphrodites that can self-fertilise, and mature adults lay clutches continuously. Not every egg survives to feeder size — in a real culture, assume a working yield well below the theoretical maximum.
The rule: you need roughly 150–200 breeding adults per puffer to comfortably out-produce demand with a safety margin. Below about 100 adults per fish, a culture tends to get harvested faster than it recovers and collapses over a few months.
The margin matters more than the exact number, because production is not steady. Cultures slow down when the temperature drops, when calcium runs short, and for a couple of weeks after any hard harvest. A colony sized exactly to demand will fail on the first bad week. A colony sized at double demand absorbs it.
The 30-Day Head Start
Bladder snail eggs take roughly two to three weeks to hatch, and hatchlings need another four to six weeks to reach breeding size. That means a culture started today is not genuinely productive for about a month, and not self-sustaining for closer to two.
So: start the culture thirty days before you buy the puffer. Not the same weekend. This single piece of sequencing separates keepers who never think about feeding from keepers who are perpetually scrambling for snails. Scaling for a group
Pea puffers are often kept in small groups — typically one male to two or three females, in a heavily planted tank with broken sightlines. Demand scales linearly, but culture capacity does not: a single tub that comfortably supports one puffer gets stripped by four, because harvest pressure rises faster than the colony's recovery rate.

Rotate rather than draining one tub. With two or three containers, harvest from one and leave the others untouched for a fortnight. Each colony gets a recovery window, and a bad week in one does not touch your supply. Cropping every container evenly each week is the most common way keepers accidentally grind a culture down to nothing.
Setting Up the Culture
A pea puffer feeder culture is deliberately unglamorous. You are farming, not aquascaping.
- Container. A 10–20 L tub, bucket or spare tank. No substrate needed; bare bottom makes harvesting far easier.
- Filtration. A cheap air-driven sponge filter. Snails tolerate a lot, but a fouled culture crashes.
- Temperature. Room temperature is fine. Warmer runs the colony faster and produces smaller, softer snails on a shorter cycle — ideal for feeders.

- Food. Algae wafers, blanched zucchini or spinach, spirulina, leftover fish food. Feed lightly and often.
- Surface. Leave an air gap. Bladder snails breathe air and need to reach the surface.
- Never copper. Not in the culture, not in anything that touches it.
Harvesting is easiest with a vegetable trap: drop a slice of blanched zucchini in at night, lift it out in the morning covered in snails, and rinse them into a cup. This gives you a mixed-size harvest without disturbing the colony.
Expert tip: run two cultures, not one
Split your starter stock across two containers in different rooms. Cultures crash — a heater fails, something contaminates the water, a feed goes bad. Two independent colonies mean a crash costs you a rebuild, not your feeding programme. This is the cheapest insurance in the hobby and almost nobody does it.
Feeding Technique and Hunting Enrichment
How you deliver the snails matters nearly as much as which snails you deliver.
Scatter, don't pile. Drop snails in two or three places around the tank rather than one spot. The puffer has to search, which is the point. A puffer that finds all its food in one corner within ten seconds has been fed but not exercised.
Feed into planted areas. Snails that crawl onto plants and hardscape are behaving the way wild prey does. Dense planting is standard advice for pea puffers anyway — it breaks sightlines and reduces the territorial aggression this species is known for — and it doubles as a hunting ground.
Watch the first meal. A newly imported puffer may ignore snails entirely for several days. Fish coming from a store fed on frozen food often need to relearn hunting. Offer snails daily, stay patient, and resist the urge to fall back on bloodworms permanently — a puffer that learns bloodworms always arrive has no reason to work for a snail.

Snails are the backbone, not the whole skeleton. A diet of nothing but Physella acuta is monotonous and probably nutritionally narrow. Aim for snails on roughly four to five days a week and something else on the rest.

The bloodworm trap
Frozen bloodworms are soft, universally accepted, and the fastest route to an overgrown beak. They are fine as an occasional supplement. They are not a fallback for "my puffer won't eat snails" — using them that way trains the fish to wait for the easy food and guarantees the exact problem you are trying to avoid.

When Appetite Drops, Check the Water First
Before you conclude a puffer has a beak problem or a food preference problem, rule out the boring explanation. Pea puffers are sensitive to water quality, and appetite is usually the first thing to go.
They come from stable, warm, heavily vegetated water. Target roughly 24–27 °C, pH near neutral to slightly alkaline, and — non-negotiably — zero ammonia and zero nitrite. Because they are messy eaters producing high waste for their size, they need a properly cycled filter and consistent maintenance. A useful diagnostic ladder when a puffer stops eating:
- Test the water. Ammonia and nitrite first. Any reading above zero is your answer.
- Check temperature. A cold tank slows metabolism and appetite.
- Drop the snail size. Offer the smallest snails in the culture and watch whether the fish can process them.
- Inspect the mouth. Look for a visibly long beak or a mouth that will not close.
- Consider parasites. Especially in a recently imported or wild-caught fish that has never fed well.
- Look at tank mates. A bullied or stressed puffer stops feeding. Pea puffers are territorial and often do best in a species-only tank.
Work down that list in order. Most refusals resolve at step one or three.
Beak Overgrowth: Spotting It and Fixing It
Because the beak grows slowly and continuously, overgrowth arrives without a clear onset. You are looking for a trend, not an event.
Early signs:
- The fish approaches snails, bites, and gives up repeatedly
- Preference shifts noticeably toward soft foods
- Visible protrusion — the beak looks long or the mouth does not fully close
- Gradual weight loss with a flattening belly despite feeding
If you catch it early, the fix is dietary: increase hard-shelled prey immediately and drop soft foods almost entirely. A mildly overgrown beak often wears back down over several weeks once the fish is crushing shells daily again. Offer snails at the small end of the size range at first — the fish needs prey it can still break.
If it is advanced, the fish cannot self-correct, because it can no longer crush the thing that would fix it. That is a veterinary problem: manual beak trimming under sedation, performed by someone experienced with fish. On a 3 cm fish this is delicate work with real risk, which is precisely why prevention is the whole strategy.
Seven Mistakes That Starve a Puffer
- Buying the fish before starting the culture. You will spend the first two months buying feeders or feeding the wrong things.
- Feeding snails that are too big. The fish appears to refuse food; it is actually unable to process it.
- Choosing trumpet snails. Hard shell, trapdoor, burrows out of reach. Wrong tool.
- Letting snails breed in the display. You lose portion control and the ability to observe intake.
- Defaulting to bloodworms when the puffer hesitates. This is how beak overgrowth starts.
- Running one culture. Every culture crashes eventually. Run two.
- Ignoring GH in the culture. Soft water produces thin, eroded shells — which means no beak wear, defeating the entire purpose.
Wild-Caught, Captive-Bred and the Conservation Problem
This belongs in a feeding guide because it changes how the fish behaves at the food dish.
Carinotetraodon travancoricus is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, driven by habitat modification across the Western Ghats and by overharvesting for the aquarium trade. Its entire natural range is a handful of river systems in Kerala and southern Karnataka. Captive breeding exists but is not yet widespread, and a meaningful share of fish in the trade are still wild-collected.
Practically, that means two things for you. Wild-caught fish often arrive carrying internal parasites and may need deworming before they feed normally — a puffer that refuses food in its first fortnight may have a health problem rather than a preference problem. And wild fish have never seen a frozen cube, so they typically take to live snails faster than store-conditioned stock does.
Where you have the choice, buy captive-bred. Ask the seller. A shop that cannot tell you is telling you something.
