Malaysian Trumpet Snail Lifespan: How Long They Live & Why

Malaysian Trumpet Snails live long enough to be a genuine long-term part of an aquarium, but not so long that a colony stops turning over. Understanding the timeline matters for two practical reasons: it tells you whether the empty shells you are finding are normal attrition or a warning sign, and it tells you how quickly a starter group becomes a working population.

Two things are worth noticing. First, growth is front-loaded — a snail does most of its growing in the first six months, then adds very little. Second, size is a poor proxy for age past the first year: a well-fed six-month-old can be larger than a starved eighteen-month-old.

Why aquarium snails stay smaller than wild ones

Wild Melanoides tuberculata can exceed 30 mm. Aquarium specimens usually top out between 15 and 25 mm. The limiting factors are almost always available calcium and competition within a dense colony. A tank holding two hundred snails in moderate hardness produces many small snails; the same tank with twenty snails and a cuttlebone produces noticeably larger individuals.

The Four Factors That Decide Lifespan

1. Temperature — the biggest single lever

Snails are ectotherms, so temperature sets metabolic rate directly. Warmer water means faster growth, faster reproduction and a shorter life.

  • 20–22 °C (68–72 °F): slow metabolism, slow breeding, longest lifespan — often over 2 years.
  • 23–26 °C (73–79 °F): the balanced range. Good activity and cleanup work, 1.5–2 years typical.
  • 27–30 °C (81–86 °F): maximum reproduction and appetite, lifespan compressed toward 12 months.

This is a genuine trade-off rather than a problem to solve. If you want a high-output feeder colony, run it warm and accept the turnover. If you want a stable, low-maintenance cleanup crew, cooler is better.

2. Calcium and general hardness

This is the factor most likely to be quietly killing your snails. A shell is calcium carbonate, and in soft, acidic water it dissolves faster than the snail can replace it.

The progression is recognisable: the sharp apex blunts and turns chalky white, pitting spreads down the whorls, the shell thins, and eventually the snail cannot maintain a viable barrier. Keepers with soft tap water often assume they are unlucky, when the actual cause is a GH of 3 and no calcium source.

Keep GH at 6 dGH or above — 8–15 is better — and keep a permanent calcium source in the tank: crushed coral, cuttlebone, or a mineral block. Note that erosion already present will not reverse. 3. Water quality and stability

Trumpet snails tolerate more than shrimp, but they are not immune. Chronic exposure to elevated ammonia or nitrite shortens life even when it does not kill outright, and repeated large parameter swings — especially in hardness — are more damaging than a steady, imperfect value.

Two specific killers deserve naming:

4. Nutrition

Underfed snails live shorter, smaller lives with thinner shells. Overfed colonies live in deteriorating water. In an established, moderately stocked tank the balance takes care of itself — detritus, biofilm and decaying plant matter supply everything they need without any deliberate feeding.

Is My Snail Dead or Just Dormant?

Trumpet snails routinely stay buried and motionless for days. Before you remove one, check properly — pulling out live snails is a common mistake, and removing a genuinely dead one promptly matters because decomposition fouls water quickly.

The smell test is decisive. A dead snail is unmistakable within seconds of lifting it out of the water.

How much attrition is normal?

In a colony of fifty or more, finding an occasional empty shell is completely normal — snails reach the end of their lives and other inhabitants clean up the remains. What is not normal is several empty shells appearing within a few days. That points to one of:

  • A copper or chemical exposure event
  • An ammonia or nitrite spike
  • A predator you have not accounted for — assassin snails leave a neat drilled hole; loaches leave crushed shells
  • A large temperature swing, often a failed heater
  • Advanced shell erosion across an age cohort in soft water

Do not leave empty shells in the tank

Actually, do — with one caveat. Empty shells slowly dissolve and return calcium to the water, which benefits your remaining snails. Leave them unless they are accumulating in numbers or the animal inside has clearly just died, in which case remove it to avoid an ammonia contribution.

Individual Lifespan vs Colony Lifespan

This distinction is the genuinely useful insight, and it separates trumpet snails from most other aquarium invertebrates.

An individual lives one to two years. The colony, however, is effectively permanent. Because every snail is reproductive and reproduction is continuous, the population regenerates faster than it dies off. You are not buying animals with a two-year clock; you are establishing a self-renewing system.

The practical consequences:

  • You buy once. Unlike nerites — which cannot reproduce in fresh water and must be replaced — a trumpet snail colony never needs restocking.
  • Individual losses are invisible. By the time an adult dies it has already produced multiple replacements.
  • The colony self-adjusts. If food declines the population shrinks; if it increases the population grows. It tracks your tank rather than a calendar.
  • Only two things end a colony: a chemical event such as copper, or a sustained predator like assassin snails.

How to Maximise Lifespan

  1. Hold GH at 8–15 dGH with a permanent calcium source. This does more than anything else on this list.
  2. Keep pH at 7.0 or above. Acidic water dissolves shells regardless of calcium availability.
  3. Run cooler — 22–24 °C if your fish allow it.
  4. Never use copper-based medications in the tank. Treat fish in a hospital tank.
