Jaeden Doody — Founder of Blackwater Aquatics & SpawnOS
Jaeden Doody is the founder of Blackwater Aquatics Canada and SpawnOS. He has kept and bred freshwater fish for eight years, breeds bettas and the live foods that feed them — scuds, daphnia and microworms — and started Blackwater after years of buying neglected bettas from pet shops, nursing them back to health and rehoming them across Canada.
Why Blackwater Aquatics exists
It started with rescues. Bettas sold in cups, kept in water that had not been changed, sitting on a shelf until somebody bought them or they died. Jaeden bought them, brought them back to health, and found them homes across Canada.
That worked until it didn't. Demand outgrew what the pet-shop shelves could ethically supply — and buying more of those fish only funds the thing that produced them. So Blackwater now breeds its own lines: healthy stock, raised properly from the start, instead of stock rescued from the consequences of the alternative.
The rescue instinct did not go anywhere. It just moved upstream.
How we keep fish
Blackwater does not sell flakes or pellets, and it is not an accident.
A fish in a bare tank eating dry food is being kept alive. A fish in a planted tank hunting live prey is being kept. Those are different things, and the difference shows up in colour, in behaviour, in breeding success, and in whether the animal has any personality worth watching.
Give a betta a naturalistic, planted tank with live food moving through it and you get an animal doing what it evolved to do — stalking, flaring, exploring, building. Give it plastic ornaments and a sterile box and you get a fish that exists. It will not breed as readily, and whatever personality it had stays hidden.
That belief is the reason this shop sells live cultures rather than convenience food, and the reason the guides are about ecosystems rather than products.
What we breed
- Bettas — the main line, and the reason for the rest of it.
- Scuds and daphnia — bred because they are the best food for bettas, not because they are easy inventory.
- Microworms — bred small enough for betta fry, which is the stage where most spawns are lost.
Everything in the catalogue traces back to keeping bettas properly. The live food range exists because bettas need it; the fry food exists because spawns fail without it.
Two brands, one workbench
Blackwater Aquatics and SpawnOS are sister brands with the same founder and owner, run as separate products.
- Blackwater Aquatics Canada supplies the living inputs — live scuds, daphnia, microworms, grindal worms, ostracods, freshwater shrimp, snails and locally bred betta fish — shipped across Canada from Quebec.
- SpawnOS supplies the record-keeping and decision-making — breeding tracking, fish compatibility tools, and a library of species overviews.
A spawn fails for two reasons: the fry had nothing appropriate to eat, or nobody wrote down what actually happened. Blackwater addresses the first. SpawnOS addresses the second.
How live orders ship
Live orders ship Mondays and Wednesdays, weather permitting, so nothing sits in a facility over a weekend.
Express Live Shipping is the only option covered by the Live Arrival Guarantee, and the only one recommended for live animals — bettas, shrimp, snails and daphnia.
Economy Live Shipping is a lower-cost option for hardy cultures such as scuds and grindal worms. It carries no Live Arrival Guarantee and no DOA coverage of any kind, and it is not recommended for live animals. Full terms are in the Live Arrival & DOA Policy and the Shipping Policy.
Shipments are held when conditions are unsafe rather than sent at the animal's expense. Free shipping applies to qualifying orders over $200 CAD, and local pickup is available in Quebec.
Why Canada only
Blackwater ships within Canada only, and that is a deliberate limit rather than a missing feature. Live invertebrates and fish are sensitive to transit time and temperature. A Canadian sender shipping to Canadian addresses keeps both inside a range livestock actually survives.
Frequently asked questions
Who owns Blackwater Aquatics?
Blackwater Aquatics Canada is founded and operated by Jaeden Doody, based in Quebec, Canada.
Are Blackwater Aquatics and SpawnOS the same company?
They are sister brands with the same founder and owner, run as separate products. Blackwater supplies live food and livestock; SpawnOS provides breeding and compatibility software.
How long has Blackwater been breeding fish?
Jaeden has kept and bred freshwater fish for eight years, focusing on bettas and the live food cultures that support them.
Does Blackwater rescue bettas?
Blackwater began by rehabilitating neglected pet-shop bettas and rehoming them across Canada. It now breeds its own healthy lines, which is the more sustainable answer to the same problem.
Is Economy shipping covered if my animals arrive dead?
No. Economy Live Shipping carries no DOA coverage. Only Express Live Shipping is covered by the Live Arrival Guarantee.
